Stephen Hawking, the author of “A Brief History of Time,” had a remarkable gift for timing. He was born on the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo. It was also a time when the Nazis were killing handicapped people. Yet during his lifetime, people with physical limitations were increasingly accepted and accommodated.

As his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis progressed, computer technology did, too, allowing him to continue to contribute to our understanding of the universe. The development of general relativity and quantum mechanics opened the door to the study of black holes.
